Cross-posting & multi-platform strategy
Most creators eventually run two or more platforms at once. Doing it well means choosing where content is native, adapting it for each platform's norms, and building a workflow that doesn't burn you out.
Choose your native-first platform
- Post to the platform your content format was actually made for first.
- Short, vertical, sound-on content is native to TikTok/Reels/Shorts; polished horizontal long-form is native to YouTube; discussion-driven posts are native to Facebook.
- Give your native-first platform a short head start before cross-posting elsewhere.
Adapting content per platform
What's native to one platform is often a liability on another.
TikTok
- Native format
- Vertical 9:16, sound-on, fast hook in the first second.
- When repurposing in
- Re-cut long-form into 21-34s clips with on-screen text; lead with the payoff, not a slow intro.
- Avoid
- Don't post horizontal, unedited long-form clips — TikTok's algorithm penalizes content that isn't adapted to vertical/sound-on norms.
- Native format
- Vertical Reels for discovery; feed posts and carousels for retention.
- When repurposing in
- Strip visible watermarks and platform UI (share sheets, other apps' logos) before reposting as a Reel.
- Avoid
- Reposting TikToks with the visible watermark still attached gets suppressed by Instagram's ranking.
YouTube
- Native format
- Horizontal long-form for authority content; vertical Shorts as a discovery funnel.
- When repurposing in
- Compile or expand short clips into a longer narrative for long-form, or post short clips natively as Shorts.
- Avoid
- Don't dump raw vertical clips as unedited long-form uploads — average view duration suffers.
- Native format
- Native uploaded video (not a shared link) posted to your Page and/or Group.
- When repurposing in
- Re-upload the video file natively rather than sharing a link to the original platform's post.
- Avoid
- Posting an external link as the whole post gets suppressed — always upload the video file directly.
A repeatable repurposing workflow
- Film or produce for your highest-effort platform first, then cut down rather than building up.
- Batch-produce: record enough raw footage in one session to generate a week or more of clips.
- Keep a lightweight checklist per platform (aspect ratio, captions, watermark removed, native upload vs. link).
Avoiding burnout on a multi-platform schedule
- Don't commit to each platform's individually ideal cadence simultaneously — pick a total weekly output you can sustain.
- Let one platform be primary and the others be secondary/repurposed-only.
- Batch content creation and scheduling into fewer, longer sessions.
- Treat a temporary pause on a secondary platform as acceptable — it doesn't have to mean starting over.
